Yssa thought the hardest part about becoming a Jedi was going to be leaving behind her big family. She didn’t anticipate losing her master so suddenly — and wasn’t at all prepared for it.
Coming from a happy, safe family on Naboo, Yssa grew up in the shadow of a massive wealthy estate, playing with her four sisters and two brothers in the beautiful lake and chasing butterflies in the fields. While a couple of her siblings showed force sensitivity, none of them had the same interest Yssa did. A girl hooked on fairy tales and magic, she wanted to believe in some great force living in everything, connecting the smallest ant to the biggest trees, and the beautiful swath of galaxy stretching overhead. She wanted magic and excitement and adventure, and with every day her control got stronger, until at twelve she caught the idea of a visiting Jedi.
Whether it was the force aptitude or her pretty smile that attracted him, the knight scooped her up like a princess in a tower and carried her off to her first experience in any sort of schooling. She knew how to read and do simple maths but big concepts amazed her, astounded her, and she finally got to see the world, the universe, beyond her small sunny home on Naboo. Her wide-eyed enthusiasm never faded, as she went through her paces. She was paired with Aviva, an older Jedi with wrinkles lining her smiles and grey in her long braid, a sweet older Alderaanian who loved Yssa’s optimism, encouraged her cheerful delight of the big galaxy around them.
But, after years of training, Yssa didn’t progress to knight. That same wonder for the world came paired with an inability to focus, with a wandering mind and curiosity that drew her away from her studies. Some of the council thought Aviva indulged Yssa too much, that she would never become a knight, nonetheless a master as wise as Aviva. But Aviva had the faith, believing in the good in Yssa.
Which made Aviva’s death all the harder on Yssa. In the middle of a battle, one of the first for the clone wars, Aviva was cut down by a droid, slick and black and sinister. Yssa screamed to the heavens, lost without her master, and all too attached.
On her way back to the Jedi temple, Yssa felt someone somewhere reach out for help. Battered and bloody from the battle, she knew she wouldn't be much help to someone – but that didn't stop her. She found Cale – in as much of a state as she was, and managed to save him from some worse fate, taking him back home to the Jedi. Once they returned, both emotional, both in need, the council knew to pair them together. He was dour, strict, she needed that. She was bright, questioning and kind, he needed that. Once Cale finally agreed to train Yssa, who needed a firm guiding hand to keep her from drifting, they were inseparable.
For better or worse.
